2014 – 8th Grade National 4th Place Winner

Alexandra Hughes, Illinois.

Blind
The world
is divided
our
world
and their
world
is one word
but split
the fissure is dark
and agony burns
cloaked by the curtain
and it drowns the light
a sea of death
destruction
and fraud
a mindless
façade
a two-sided
beast
is rearing its head
yet we are mesmerized
nay, are hypnotized
by falsified beauty
and shallow reflections
skin-deep concoctions
that bounce off the window
and blind us to truth;
the healing love
and terrible pain
the wrenching heart
and soothing rain
raw and pure
dark and deep
beauty is life
in truth
and love…
but we are blind
and we are deaf
we turn away
and thus we die
among our own
gaudy imitations.
